REVIEW: Primus - A Handful Of Nuggs EP

 

Les Claypool and Primus just wrapped up the Claypool Gold ‘26 tour in the States and are about to embark on international dates.  Prior to the tour, the band digitally released a new EP, A Handful Of Nuggs and now, the physical version has been released via ATO Records.  

The 4-song EP features the new track, “The Ol’ Grizz” and a cover of Dio’s “Holy Diver” featuring lead vocals from Puddles Pity Party.  Rounding it out are two previously-released tracks, the Maynard James Keenan-featuring “Little Lord Fentanyl” and a live version of “Duchess (And The Proverbial Mind Spread)”.   

The new single, “The Ol’ Grizz” - energized by new drummer John Hoffman – is a dynamic track with a frenetic bassline and heavy, head-nodding groove that incorporates elements of both the band’s early thrash days as well as its prog-rock tendencies.  Next, is a somewhat faithful cover of the power metal classic, “Holy Diver” with the able vocals of Puddles Pity Party, though the best part is getting to hear Ler shred and solo to a track that no doubt influenced him from a young age.  The B-side consists of the psychedelic-tinged “Little Lord Fentanyl” with its guest vocals from Tool’s Maynard James Keenan and a live version of the Brown Album favorite “Duchess (And The Proverbial Mind Spread)”, recorded in Philly with Hoffman on drums.   

Primus continues to push boundaries and create amazing music with their sampler-sized new EP, A Handful Of Nuggs.  Here’s hoping there is more to come soon!
