REISSUE: Smashing Pumpkins – Gish (35th Anniversary)
Gish, the Smashing
Pumpkins debut album was released 35 years ago in 1991 and to celebrate, Capitol
Records/Virgin/UMe just released a new remastered vinyl edition pressed onto
180 gram vinyl with its original artwork.
Many Smashing Pumpkins fans were first introduced to the Chicago-based
band in 1993 via MTV with their video for “Today”, taken from their stellar
sophomore album Siamese Dream but
other, luckier fans were already blown away by the psychedelic swirl of guitars
a few years earlier with songs like “Rhinoceros”, “Siva” and “I am One” from
their underappreciated debut album, Gish.
The album was produced by Butch Vig who had a busy 1991,
also producing Nirvana’s Nevermind. Together, Billy Corgan, James Iha, D’arcy and
Jimmy Chamberlain created an often imitated but never fully-duplicated style with
a signature wall of sound with their shoegaze-inspiring and blinding Sabbath-inspired
guitar tones. Tracks like “Snail” with
its jet-fuelled, dive-bombing guitar solos and the infectiously melodic and
melancholic standout track, “Rhinceros”, along with the 60’s psych-rock
inspired atmospherics of album opener, “I Am One”; revealed a band poised to
burst forth, as they did with the mainstream success of Siamese Dream.
This new remastered 35th anniversary vinyl
pressing of Gish is the perfect
starting point for new listeners and a welcomed addition to longtime fan’s
collections.
