REVIEW: Goose - BIG MODERN!

The ever-prolific Connecticut jam band recently released their stellar sixth studio album and third in less than two years.  Out now is Big Modern! and it is the perfect soundtrack to the Summer.

Matching the vibrant colors and all caps font of the album art, the band – led by vocalist/guitarist Rick Mitarotonda and keyboardist Matt Campbell – incorporates 80’s inspired pop sounds like, instantly-danceable Talking Head-like rhythms into their already eclectic sound, as on the dynamic title track, with its twitchy rhythm and heavy, prog-inspired freakout.  Another standout, “Savenger” plays with 80’s-sired synths and a catchy chorus; sounding like a laser beam from the FM radio dial, circa 1985.  Other standouts include the single, “Good2B” with its hip-shaking beat, funky guitars and easy-going, sing-along melodies, and “Media”, on which the paranoia is visceral in the frantic guitars and noisy outbursts.  Additionally, the nearly thirteen minute long “Salt” brings the live concert feel to the home stereo with room-filling organ and plenty of wild guitar solos.

Though it may be titled, Big Modern!, the new retro-minded album from Goose actually sounds more like a blast from the 80’s with its neon synths and dancefloor-ready rhythms and it will have you dancing and singing along all Summer long.
