REVIEW: Toilet Rats – IV (Deluxe Edition)
Toilet Rats is the Minneapolis-based one-man band led by
Tommy Ratz (Thomas Rehbein of Naïve Sense, Robosapien, Small Towns Burn A
Little Slower and more). Ratz creates a danceable,
noisy yet poppy synth-heavy brand of punk that is informed as much by pop icon Madonna
as it is 80’s thrash metal legends D.R.I.
Originally released last year on limited edition cassette
via Steadfast Records, the label has just reissued a deluxe edition of IV, by Toilet Rats on slime green
eco-mix vinyl and CD. The deluxe edition
includes 2 new bonus tracks; “Mall Goth” and “Brains”; the latter features
Tommy’s longtime collaborator Trevor Bartlett on background vocals, the former
is a bouncy, post-punk sugar-shot. Both tracks
perfectly complement standout album track, “Drug Bird”, which sounds like the
Ramones if they had incorporated the synth sounds of their era.
