REISSUE: The Band – Music from Big Pink 50th Anniversary

In 1968, The Band – consisting of multi-instrumentalists Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson – released their beloved debut album, Music from Big Pink.  After making a name for themselves touring as Bob Dylan’s backing band, The Band created a blend of styles incorporating everything from country, blues, gospel, folk and rock and turned it into a highly-influential sound.  Led by singles such as “The Weight”, “Tears of Rage” and “I Shall Be Released”, Music from Big Pink basically spearheaded the entire Americana genre and its influence is evident today, over 50 years later.      

In celebration and in honor of such a legacy, Capitol/UMe will release Music from Big Pink in a newly remixed and expanded 50th Anniversary Edition package on 8/31.  Packagers include a Super Deluxe CD/Blu-ray (with 5.1 stereo mix)/2LP/7-inch vinyl box set with a hardbound book (with an in-depth essay from Rolling Stone’s David Fricke and era-specific photography from Elliot Landy) and in1-CD and digital configurations. 

Also of note, the album has been expanded to a 2-LP package for the first time and was mixed at 45rpm and pressed onto 180-gram black vinyl or limited edition pink vinyl.  All packages feature a new stereo mix of the album, produced by Bob Clearmountain and sourced from the original four-track analog masters.  Additionally - also for the first time - some previously unreleased studio chatter from the recording sessions as well as five outtakes and alternate recordings, highlighted by a previously unreleased a cappella version of “I Shall Be Released”,  are included.
