3 Songs: On Repeat (The National’s Homecoming fest Edition)

Brooklyn indie rock institution The National, originally hails from Cincinnati and are returning home this weekend with a bunch of their musician and artist friends for their inaugural Homecoming Festival.  Curated by The National and in association with MusicNOW, the Homecoming Festival will take place at Smale Park in Cincinnati on April 28 and 29.  The National will headline each night of the weekend and will perform their acclaimed album, The Boxer in its entirety on Sunday night to close out the show.  Also appearing are Dayton’s own alt-rock legends The Breeders as well as Feist, Father John Misty, Lord Huron, Future Islands, Moses Sumney, Mouse On Mars, Alvvays, Big Thief, Julien Baker and many more.

Lord Huron – “Ancient Names (Part I)” (Lord Huron, fronted by Ben Schneider, continue to expand and evolve their sound, further disguising their folk-rock roots on their recently released new album, Vide Noir.  Out now on Whispering Pines/Republic Records, the aptly-titled new album is more cinematic and experimental with a psychedelic atmosphere, danceable rhythms and elements of doo wop and dream-pop.  Be sure to catch Lord Huron playing the West stage on Saturday at 3:15.) http://www.lordhuron.com/

Mouse On Mars – “Dimensional People III (feat. Justin Vernon)” (The Berlin-based experimental electronic duo of Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner recently released their new album, Dimensional People.  Out now on Thrill Jockey, the guest-heavy new album is their most wildly inventive, including contributions from Swamp Dogg, Justin Vernon and Zack Condon as well as fellow Homecoming fest performers Spank Rock, Lisa Hanigan, Sam Amidon and Aaron & Bryce Dessner of The National.  With the possibility of guest appearances, their set on Saturday at 6 on the East stage is shaping up to be the performance of the weekend.) www.mouseonmars.com

Father John Misty – “Disappointing Diamonds Are The Rarest Of Them All” (This bittersweet yet jaunty piano-led and horn-leaden standout single will be included on FJM’s highly-anticipated fourth album, God’s Favorite Customer, due out June 1 on Sub Pop.  Hopefully the song will be included in his set Saturday at 7 on the West stage.) https://www.fatherjohnmisty.com/

Sam Amidon – “Blackbird” (The experimental folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist released his most recent album, The Following Mountain, last year on Nonesuch Records which was produced by Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Regina Spektor) and prominently features frequent collaborator Shahzad Ismaily.  Amidon arranges his Appalachian-inspired folk music like a true craftsman, yet takes it into new directions with jazz-informed instrumentation and percussion-heavy rhythms.  Amidon will perform on the East stage on Saturday at 4:15.) http://www.nonesuch.com/artists/sam-amidon
