REVIEW: Kim Deal – Nobody Loves You More
Dayton, Ohio alternative rock legend Kim Deal of The Pixies
and The Breeders just released her debut solo album, Nobody Loves You More, via 4AD Records. On the 11 song collection, Deal pushes the boundaries
of her buzzy brand of alt-rock by adding big band horns and sweeping strings, brash
electronic beats and aching pedal steel.
Though a solo effort, Kim is assisted by longtime collaborators such as
her sister Kelley and fellow Breeders bandmate Jim Macpherson as well as Jack
Lawrence of the Raconteurs, Fay and Ayse of Savages and the late Steve Albini,
who engineered 8 of the tracks.
Standout tracks on the album include the touching album
opening title track, “Nobody Loves You More”, with its soaring string section
and horns as well as the infectious and fun first single, “Coast” with its
jangly guitars and driving horns. Standouts
on the B-side include, “Big Ben Beat” which is led by a bombastic buzzing bass
line and booming electronic beat and “Summerland” with its heart-tugging
nostalgia.
With her debut solo album, Kim Deal continues to show why
she is a beloved figure in the indie rock world; a true gem from the Gem City.
