Stream It From The Mountain: Somos – First Day Back

Somos, the Boston-based indie-rock quartet recently released their highly-anticipated sophomore album, First Day Back via new label home, Hopeless Records.  Their excellent 2014 debut album, Temple Of Plenty (Tiny Engines Records) was on my Top 10 Albums list that year and they expand upon their taut, rhythm-driven alt-punk sound by experimenting with electronics and synth-smeared atmospherics alongside vocalist/bassist Michael Fiorentino’s clever wordplay and melancholic yet highly-melodic melodies.  

“Violent Decline” with its twinkling guitars and tumbling drums and first single, “Thorn In The Side” with its chugging, bass-led rhythm and soaring, sing-along refrain stand out among an album full of standout tracks.  First Day Back shows Somos growing into their skin and experimenting with their sound but the energetic essence of the band is not lost and they have improved greatly on the promise of their debut with this sophomore-slump busting release.
